Tony Ghaemi Experience

F. Tony Ghaemi received his degrees from San Diego State University: Bachelor of Science in Chemical Physics in 1982, and Master of Science in Physics (optics concentration) in 1985. His early career years were in the field of medical optics as R&D optical engineer working on intra-ocular lenses. He spent the next 13 years in design, build and test of high precision space-qualified optical systems ranging from half-meter size reflective telescopes to small refractive optical systems used on NASA missions. In 2001 he joined Malin Space Science Systems (MSSS) in San Diego, CA as the Lead Optics Engineer, where he spent over 7 years handling various responsibilities in a small hardware group to design and build science cameras for NASA's Mars and Moon exploratory missions. His responsibilities included optical design and analysis; opto-mechanical design; optics vendor proposal review, contract award & management; optical testing; system calibration; and most recently design and build of four science camera lenses for the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) rover, successfully launched 26 November 2011.
